How To Create Privacy On Your Patio

Patios are fantastic spaces to use for outdoor rooms and entertaining areas, but have you ever felt that your patio isn't as private as you would like it to be? Some of us are burdened with overly nosy neighbours, and if our patio areas are in full view of their backyard we may not be as inclined to use them as we should be. By using these tips to help create privacy on your patio, you will be able to entertain more comfortably and less openly.

1. Raised Planters

If you have the available space, consider constructing raised planters along one side of your patio. Two to three tiers is usually okay for creating a better sense of privacy, and if you plant shrubs that grow reasonably tall in the back planter you will create an added natural screen as well. Moveable containers would also create a similar effect on your patio, remembering that you need to plant shrubs that will grow to a reasonable height.

2. Trellis and Latticework

There are two ways that you are able to use trellis and latticework around your patio to create privacy as well as allow airflow. Firstly, install the screens and paint them in colours that are complementary to the rest of your house and garden. In a lot of cases, this is enough to create a sense of privacy on your patio. Secondly, if you want that added certainty of deterring prying eyes or you want to make your trellis and latticework more attractive, plant a climber of a vine at the base of the screens. Over time, the plants will climb and spread up the trellis and latticework, completely screening your patio in.

3. Patio Curtains

The use of curtains really does depend on where your patio is placed. Do you have just a single open wall that you would like to cover sometimes, or a wide archway entrance that you want to screen from view? In these cases, the use of patio curtains is highly effective. There is a range of materials available, from gauzy see-through to silky ones, that are able to promote privacy. They are also washable, meaning you can ensure they are always looking brand new.

4. Tall Plants

Your final option for creating privacy on your patio is to plant some tall growing plants around the edges. Ornamental grasses look fantastic with some varieties being known to grow up to thirteen feet in height. They are also fast growing, which is a bonus if you want privacy fast. Hedges and medium height evergreens are also popular options for screening nosy neighbours from direct views of your patio area.

Any one of these privacy options is sure to work wonders on your patio area, or you could even use a combination if your patio really is in full view. Keep prying eyes out for good, and feel comfortable using your patio at all times of the year.
